‘You May Know These People’, was a performance during which the artist sat at a table with his laptop, deleting all of his Facebook friends one by one, until none of them remained. His laptop screen was broadcast behind him, for the audience to see, and was simultaneously screen-captured to be presented as a video work for the duration of the exhibition. The subjectivity we embody as Facebook users - constant performativity, quantifiable interactions, and a misguided sense of responsibility for our own privacy - is highly desirable for (and conditioned by) neoliberalism. It isn’t uncommon for people to censor their online presence to “remain professional”, and yet, Facebook usage is still regarded as a form of non-work and procrastination. In deleting each of my friends on Facebook, I reject the neoliberal subjectivity fostered by Facebook by rendering my active account functionless.
