Acting and Looking is a two channel video installation featuring a photographer and a dancer collaborating to produce images. As the photographer takes a picture, it is immediately projected for the dancer to view, and thereby monitor her own movements. The first channel reveals the points in time the photographer decides to capture. These moments are informed by the photographer's understanding of the dancer’s objectives, providing an indirect relationship between the dancer’s movements and the camera’s flashes. Simultaneously, the dancer’s movements only gesture towards dance to exist in a photographic outcome. The second channel features a candid off-screen conversation between the photographer and the dancer. The conversation details their failure in communication and inability to attain ‘ideal dance images’. As post-production was kept to a minimum, this channel closer resembles documentation of the relational encounter.
